Description

2.2.2.2. 4.2.3.0. Timp. Str.

This score is based on the 1968 edition by Leopold Nowak, called the 1869 version.

At that time it was thought that there had been earlier sketches for a D minor symphony

between October 1863 andMay 1864. That has now been proved not to have been the case,

and this symphony was composed in 1869 between what are now known as the

1st and 2nd symphonies, the latter written in 1872. At that point no

numbers had officially been given to the symphonies. Between 1872 and 1873

Bruckner numbered his early symphonies, but it was after he had played through this

symphony at the piano with Otto Dessoff, following a disparaging remark that

there was no proper first subject to the symphony that Bruckner set it aside.

What should have been Symphony No.3 in C minor therefore became

Symphony No. 2 inC minor. The score was kept by Bruckner and went to the

Belvedere in Vienna with him in 1895.

This edition has made firm some of the dynamics in parentheses which are in the 1968 Nowak edition.
